New store to be built

23 March 2007
BUDGET supermarket chain Lidl has been granted permission to build a century supermarket on the former Robin Hood pub site.

A massive glazed entrance foyer will greet customers at the new Longbridge Road store, with power generated by 11 windturbines on top of 26 flats above the store.

Plans have been in the pipeline for the development for months, but a debate over the positioning of the main entrance meant the application was rejected by members of the Development Control Board in October last year.

But a new application with changes to the layout was submitted and last week members agreed to grant permission.

Builders will not be able to start work on the site until the developers have met several planning conditions, including a noise test to see what impact the turbines will have on neighbouring properties.

Once complete, shoppers will only be able to enter and exit the development via Longbridge Road, although there will be an access road off Becontree Avenue for deliveries.

The front of the building will feature a glass atrium, which will protrude from the corner of the two busy roads, with shelves or window covering.
