Sullivan backs a Premier salary cap

SPEAKING OUT: David Sullivan.
SPEAKING OUT: David Sullivan.
WEST HAM joint-chairman David Sullivan has revealed that he would not be against a salary cap being imposed in the Premier League.

In another sideways swipe at the Icelandic former owners of the club, Sullivan condemned the big money that has been spent on wages in the game in the last few years.

"There was a reality coming until Chelsea, then West Ham broke the line, and now it is Manchester City," said Sullivan.

"After Roman Abramovich, there was a levelling off, then the Icelandics come to West Ham and it was madness what they paid people relative to what they were worth."

He continued: "I think wealthy owners are bad for football.

"The ultimate solution would be a wage cap. I've always been against it, but I'm starting to swing towards it.

"My partner David Gold doesn't believe in it, but I think it's the only way of putting a cap on and keeping clubs solvent.

"There could be a formula that could work. The wages are out of all proportion with the turnover of the clubs and I think, somehow, there should be some control."

West Ham revealed debts of around £110million following the takeover.
